Samlen

A great summit hike to Samlen with panoramic views of the Hardangerfjord and the surrounding villages of Herand.

One of the finest views in Hardanger

Samlen towers above Herand and offers one of the most spectacular views in Hardanger. From the summit, 686 metres above sea level, you can look both up and down the Hardangerfjord, towards Granvinfjorden, Norheimsund, Øystese and Samladalen. It’s a short distance from the car but has a real mountain feel at the top, which has made Samlen a favourite with locals and visitors who want a big view without a full day’s hike.

A short but steep hike

The hike starts just north of Herand along county road 550. Turn left at the sign for “Hardanger kulturgalleri”, and after about 400 metres you’ll find a dedicated car park for Samlen. From there, the trail leads through spruce forest before reaching Hardangertrappa, a Sherpa-built stone staircase that winds up the steep mountainside. The path then climbs steadily through pine forest, and once you’re above the treeline, the view opens up over Herand and the surrounding Herand mountains.

The round trip is about 6.7 km with roughly 500 metres of ascent. Allow 3–4 hours in total. The trail is marked with an “H” all the way to the top.

The season normally runs from May to November. In summer, Samlen makes a perfect evening hike, and the sunset over the fjord is well worth waiting for.

Before you go

Parts of the trail are steep, and some sections are rocky and wet. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential, especially after rain, when the path can be slippery. Bring water, a snack and an extra layer, because it can get windy at the top even on a warm summer’s day. The car park is run by Herand Sports Club, and the parking fee goes towards maintaining the trail.

A view that stops you in your tracks

At the top of Samlen, the Hardangerfjord stretches out beneath you in both directions. You can see the villages along the shore, the green valleys and the mountains framing it all. It’s the kind of view that has you reaching for your camera, and then lingering long after the photo is taken.
